Christmas Eve

Calum MacDonald entertained residents, their relatives and staff to a medley of Christmas classics and other toe tapping songs in the Café area of Northcote Lodge on Christmas Eve, which is our annual Christmas party.  On offer were mince pies, bucks fizz, mulled wine and soft drinks.

Everyone joined in and had a great time, some of the staff and relatives took to the dance floor, young and old!  The ‘old’ later giving a dance demonstration of the ‘Slosh’! ?

The Christmas raffle was also drawn, there were a number of Christmas Hampers, plus chocolates, various bottles of wine and champagne to be won.  We managed to raise a whopping £709 which will go toward the creation of our Sensory Garden (the 1st phase of laying the slabs for our walkway is now complete).  As always a good time was had by all and everyone got into the Christmas spirit and ready for the following day – Christmas Day!

Guy Fawkes – 2019

‘Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November

Gunpowder, Treason and Plot

We see no reason

Why gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot’

On Tuesday the 5th November we celebrated with our annual Fireworks evening.  It was fortunate that Tuesday was a dry, bright night.  Prior to the Fireworks display, residents and relatives were treated to a choice of hamburgers with cheese and relish, hotdogs and macaroni cheese, all washed down with hot chocolate with marshmallows to keep the cold night air out.

Our volunteers, (the 3 musketeers, Chris Livingston, Geoff Smith and Gordon Webster ?) expertly and safely gave the Fireworks display.  We were treated to all sorts of fireworks, some small, some large, some very loud, some very bright, which thrilled all our spectators for over half an hour.  All in all, it was a very enjoyable and successful night as the pictures below depict.  Roll on next year!

Jenny’s Donkeys – Cuthbert and McGrew

On Monday 14th October, the residents were treated to a visit by ‘Cuthbert and McGrew’, 2 lovely donkeys who live in Inverurie.  Thankfully it was a lovely autumn afternoon and the sun shone, which allowed the residents to go out into the garden to see them.

Their owners told us they are the best of friends and were actually bought as a ‘job lot’ as one wouldn’t come without the other!  They had been washed and groomed for their special visit and were looking splendid.  We were also told they were very gentle creatures and loved company and cuddles.  As you will see from the pictures, they were loving all the attention they were getting from the residents.

Jerry Lee Lewis Tribute Act

On Friday 23rd August, the residents were treated to an excellent ‘Jerry Lee Lewis’ Tribute Act.
The entertainer was a young man called Robin, who, for his young years, managed to emulate the Jerry Lee Lewis sound and songs perfectly!  He really did have us ‘rocking and rolling’ and some of our residents put the younger members of staff to shame with their dance routines!

A good time was definitely had by all and also proves that music definitely lifts the spirits and brings everyone together!

Annual Summer Gala 2019

We held our Annual Summer Gala on Saturday 10th August.  Thankfully it turned out to be a lovely day ? which allowed us to enjoy our barbeque outdoors, which is something of a miracle for a planned barbeque with our inclement Aberdeen weather!

Our two chefs Dave and Miro provided delicious hamburgers with relish, hotdogs and macaroni and cheese, which could be washed down with soft drinks or a Bucks Fizz!

Guests were welcomed to Northcote by the stirring sounds of the bagpipes and were later entertained in the café area by one of our regular entertainers, Bob Wilson, who sang a melody of songs which everyone could sing along to.

There were a variety of stalls, with something for everyone, which included our famous Northcote home bakes, a flower stall, jewellery stall and a special ‘Resident’s Fun Stall’.  We also had a tombola and raffles with some fantastic prizes, the top prize being afternoon tea for 4 at the New Marcliffe Hotel.  We also had a ‘Kids Corner’ with bouncy castle and face painting!

It was very well attended by residents, relatives and friends of Northcote and together we managed to raise a whopping £2,700!!  The money will go towards funding our ‘Sensory Garden Project’ which is still in the planning stage but promises to be a lovely area for our residents to explore and enjoy.

Impromptu Barbecue – Northcote Style!

As summer is well and truly here (well hopefully for the foreseeable future ?) Residents and some family members, enjoyed an impromptu lunchtime barbecue on Thursday 27th June 2019.

It was a lovely sunny day and our 2 chefs, Dave and Miro laid on a very tasty lunch, consisting of burgers in a bun with all the usual extras, cheese, onions and choice of sauces and also hotdogs – yummy! We took the opportunity to take some photographs of our residents enjoying themselves and Miro also agreed to pose for a photograph whilst hard at work!

If you look closely, in the background, you will see our resident Saxony ducks were trying to get in on the action – although unfortunately for them – they had to stick to their lettuce!

Happy New Year!!!

It’s hard to believe that 2018 is already here but here it jolly well is!

We enjoyed a great festive season at Northcote Lodge and now all the Christmas decorations are tucked away just in time for 12th night we are  very much looking forward to the next 12 months.

All information about events and notices will be posted right here.

Do pop in to see us or click back to our website from time to time to see what we are up to next.

Meanwhile may I just say on behalf of the residents and the team here at Northcote,

Have A Guid New Year – One and All!

We Are All Getting Ready For A Very Merry Christmas!

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

Christmas is a wonderful time of year and the residents of Northcote Lodge have been fully engaged in planning, decorating and celebrating the forthcoming holiday.
We had an outing to choose the perfect tree everyone enjoyed decorating. It has pride of place in reception in the heart of the cafe where everyone can enjoy the wonderful scent of pine and the twinkly lights.
We have had outings to the Panto, Christmas Carol concerts, festive get togethers, dances and there is a choir coming in to entertain this weekend. There was quite a frisson of excitement when it was announced Elvis is booked to come in and sing a few songs on the 22nd to celebrate Anne and Freda’s birthdays.  Let’s hope he’s got some thermal blue suede shoes as the weather has certainly been wintery!

This is not the Elvis that’s coming – but we prefer our own one!

This time of year means its harder to get out and about so when the frost is hard and the snow has fallen everyone enjoys watching the birds at the feeders, the occasional red deer that leaps into the garden and other wintery woodland goings on.

With an open door policy friends and family  are always welcome to pop in for a cup of tea and a mince pie from dawn til dusk and beyond – so don’t be a stranger. You will always get a warm welcome.

Merry Christmas to you and yours from all residents, friends and staff at Northcote.

Autumn at Northcote Lodge

What a mixed summer we have had this year. Balmy sunny days have been spent enjoying the garden which is looking its best with herbs, begonias rhubarb and strawberries in abundance.  Rainy days are spent doing arts and crafts, watching classic movies and enjoying the home bakes in the cafe.

We never stand still for long though and we have lots of things to look forward to.

Northcote Lodges’ Annual Bingo Night is at the Ashvale Restaurant in Great Western Road on Friday 25th August at 7pm. Tickets are available at Northcote Reception.  All money raised goes to the resident’s funds. Great food and great fun. HOUSE!

Squibs and fun.

There are plans afoot for our annual fireworks display after which hot dogs, hot chocolate and marshmallows will be served in the cafe.

Deck the halls with Bows of Holly!

December is already looking busy and packed with fun and before we know it Christmas will be upon us. We have so much to look forward to with a visiting pantomime, singers, school children singing Carols and an endless supply of mince pies and good cheer.
******Our fundraising total was over £2000 at our Summer Gala this year so THANK YOU to everyone who took part. We look forward to doing it all again next year.*****

Northcote Summer Gala 2017 a HUGE success!

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make our Summer gala 2017 such a huge success! What a great day we had.

On the days running up to Saturday 15th July residents and staff worked hard to make sure everything was ready

So on Saturday morning with Tombola goodies wrapped, raffle prizes displayed, barbecue set up ,  bouncy castle inflated, bar manned and ready, homebakes packaged up to sell, enough tea and goodies for most of Aberdeen we opened the doors at 11am sharp.

Friends and family  were piped in as they arrived.A man in a kilt always puts a smile on everyones face and our man was no exception!

The Tombola is always a favourite and there were 3 volunteers behind the counter keeping up with demand for tickets. From bottles of whisky to sets of cutlery and a myriad of other generous donations they sold out and fast!

The weather was the one thing we couldn’t organise but undaunted the staff moved the bouncy castle inside so despite the rain it could be enjoyed by all. And it was – as you can see here…

An  endless stream of visitors took part in all the entertainment and enjoyed gallons of tea and kilos of home bakes, and try as it might the rain did not daunt anyone from heading out to the BBQ  where burgers and hot dogs went down a storm too.

Diane Livingston – our fabulous Home Manager – introduced everyone and still going strong at the end of the day drew the raffle to a packed  room. Shrieks of delight and surprise as the generous donations were liberally spread out amongst all.

We will post the final total of our fundraising as soon as we have it. But we wanted firstly to say a huge THANK YOU to you for supporting the day and making residents and staff feel very special indeed.  We are already looking forward to next year……….
